Import Filters for CFD and FEA data

The DX Builder is a single Data Explorer module which dynamically creates internal structures from FEA and CFD application results using SciViz's readers. Each of these readers is documented in a separate manual. DX Builder currently supports the following readers:

* ABAQUS Standard (abaqus.txt)

* ANSYS (ansys.txt)

* FIDAP (fidap.txt)

* LS-DYNA3D (dyna3D.txt)

* MSC/DYTRAN (dytran.txt)

* MSC/NASTRAN (nastran.txt)

Note: On the Dec Alpha machine the filter for dytran files will only work if the files were created on a Dec Alpha. If the files were created on another architecture and then read in on an Alpha there will be a byte swapping problem and the filter won't work.

No programming is required. No file format knowledge is required.

Data Explorer with the DX Builder provides powerful capabilities with many benefits. Users can flexibly display any data item using any visual cue or graphic technique; map multiple data items to different visual representations; manipulate models during animations; and rapidly add new visual techniques from many sources.

Users are encouraged to specify more data items to be generated by their analysis program, then peruse them visually on a selective basis with the assistance of the DX Builder and Data Explorer.

The DX Builder is a single Data Explorer module which has a Motif- based user interface. It dynamically creates structures for use by any Data Explorer network.

The DX Builder can begin with either results files from FEA or CFD applications, or MetaFiles created by individual readers. Individual readers are documented in separate guides. The DX Builder release is composed of the following files:

DX_Builder This is the DX Builder Data Explorer module. It is an "outboard" module, meaning it runs within Data Explorer as its own process.

dx_build.mdf This is the module description file for the DX Builder module.

Since DX Builder is an outboard module, it requires a module description file. This file, dx_build.mdf, must be used to let Data Explorer know about the DX Builder module. This can be done in one of two ways:

1) When starting Data Explorer, provide the dx_build.mdf on the command line:

dx -mdf dx_build.mdf

2) From within Data Explorer, utilize the "Load Module Description(s)" option from the "File" pull-down menu. Then, select the dx_build.mdf file with the file browser.

Once this is done, an entry called "DXBuilder" will appear in the list of Import/Export modules.

Note: Once the module is placed in a network, "Execute on Change" must be active for the user interface to appear.

See dxbuilder.txt for more information on DX_Builder.
