You're welcome.
1) I've usually skip the "startupui" and have just used dx -edit, dx -startup, dx -tutor directly.  I think if you specify -directory /usr/local/dx/samples/programs as well, these will come up using that directory.  You may be able to set X resources to have the same effect.  I am not the authority on these issues, perhaps
someone who is can respond.
2) isn't right... not that I'm disputing your observation.  It may be a font (or font color=background) issue.  I seem to recall something of this sort happening before on linux.  It may have been lesstif-version related?  Perhaps you could search the mail list archives for this problem (if you already have, my apologies).
